In sharp contrast to all other fuels, renewables used for generating electricity will grow in 2020. Global energy demand is set to decline but long-term contracts, priority access to the grid and continuous installation of new plants are all underpinning strong growth in renewable electricity. This more than compensates for declines in bioenergy for industry and biofuels for transport – mostly the result of lower economic activity.
Renewables 2020 includes an assessment on how resilient renewable energy development and deployment have been during the pandemic. The PDF report, provides detailed analysis and forecasts for the electricity, heat and transport sectors through 2025 with a focus on the impact of the Covid-19 crisis.
For the first time, Renewables 2020 includes a dynamic data dashboard enabling users to explore historical data and forecasts for all sectors and technologies. The associated Renewables 2020 dataset (documentation) gives full access to all of the data available in this dashboard, plus additional premium data for all sectors and technologies, including additional historical years.
In particular, the dataset includes electricity and capacity forecast data for both the main case presented in the Renewables 2020 report, and an accelerated case that illustrates how certain market and policy enhancements could increase renewable deployment. The technologies contained in the data set include bioenergy, hydropower (including pumped storage for capacity), onshore and offshore wind, solar PV, solar CSP, geothermal, and ocean technologies.
